Internet Safety: Email
EMAIL
Email (Electronic mail) is a method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients. While early email only allowed text-based communications, it was extended to carry multimedia content attachments. This has expanded our abilities to send family and friends as well as business associates information and content at a rapid and useful rate, but it has also allowed for the easy spread of viruses and spyware across email attachments.
Be wary of spam.
Spam has become the biggest issue for email since its inception. Just like with regular postal mail, "junk" mail has accumulated in every person's mailbox, comprising of unwanted solicitations from businesses. However spam on the internet does not even come from legitimate businesses most of the time and most of them are meant to contain links to harmful websites or attachments with viruses and spyware inside.
It is best to make certain that your email provider has a decent spam filter option and that you have it enabled so that you do not accidentally open a spam email. Be aware, however, that not all spam will always be caught by even the best filters, so always be cautious with all of your email when it contains links and attachments.
